It takes a lot of hard work and determination to inspire entire generation of people and to give back to the society as much as some people do. Only a few are able to succeed so well.
Among them is one name AR. CHARLES CORREA.
A true pioneer of architecture and someone who we always have respected through his amazing contribution in the field of architecture.
Low- incoming housing in Gujarat and Maharashtra to luxury residences in the heart of Mumbai- Charles Correa has left an enduring legacy on the Indian Landscape. A collection of designs and diagrams of 20 of the iconic architect’s housing projects, both built and un-built, are on display at living ideals- Designs for housing by Charles Correa, at the Indian institute of Architects (IIA) in Kasba, as a part of a travelling exhibition.
It is a tribute to architect’s legacy as an inspirational architect and thinker, recognized all over the world. He won several national and international awards and was an expert in urban planning and affordable housing. He was honored with Padma Shri in 1972 and with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honor in 2006.
Correa taught at several universities in India and abroad and received awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the premium Imperial of Japan and the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) which billed him as India’s greatest Architect’s.
In the 1970’s he was the chief architect of Navi Mumbai, the new city that came up across the harbor from Mumbai, and was later appointed the first chairman of the National Commission on Urbanization.
